Kaori Sugimoto, Partner, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu

Kaori Sugimoto is a partner at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu. Her practice focuses on international dispute resolution including international arbitration as well as international construction & infrastructure project. She has extensive experience in negotiation or drafting of contracts for international construction and infrastructure projects, particularly those involving Japanese companies in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. She is proficient in international arbitration, with a focus on resolving construction-related disputes, in which she frequently serves as legal counsel. She is currently a member of ENAA (Engineering Advancement Association of Japan) and ECFA (Engineering and Consulting Firms Association).

 

Claire Chong, Counsel, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu Singapore LLP

Claire Chong is a dispute resolution lawyer focusing on international arbitration.

She is experienced in complex, cross-border commercial disputes across a wide range of sectors, including energy and construction, international trade and distribution, joint ventures, M&A, and healthcare.

Claire has represented clients in arbitrations conducted under major institutional rules including the ICC, AAA/ICDR, ICSID, HKIAC, and SIAC rules.

Claire has practiced with the arbitration team of a US international law firm where she advised clients on investment and public international law issues. She previously practiced with a leading Singapore law firm, assisting Senior Counsel in disputes before the Singapore courts.”

 

 

Justin Ee, Partner, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu Singapore LLP

Justin Ee is a Singapore-qualified attorney with broad-based experience in commercial disputes and advisory work. He advises on both contentious and non-contentious matters in the construction and infrastructure, banking, insurance, services and sale of goods sectors, among others, as well as other corporate and commercial disputes and matters. He has represented his clients as lead counsel in negotiations and various forms of dispute resolution processes including litigation, arbitration, adjudication, neutral evaluation and mediation, and has experience in a diverse spectrum of projects ranging from hospitals, commercial and industrial complexes, airports/hangars and power plants to district cooling, railway and tunneling projects.

Kenji Ogama serves as the Regional Director for North & Southeast Asia at Jalubro Consulting Ltd., bringing over 16 years of diverse and specialized expertise in the Legal Tech, eDiscovery, and Forensic sectors across the globe. His deep-rooted experience in leveraging technology to address challenges has been instrumental in enhancing the value, performance, and efficiency of projects for globally renowned brands and government agencies. Jun Kashio, Of Counsel, Atsumi & Sakai

Jun Kashio is an attorney at law in Japan and is licensed in New York, as well.  He worked as a Deputy Counselor at the Secretariat: Cabinet Office Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters in the Cabinet Office from 2017 to 2020, where he was in charge of intellectual property issues in the digital area, including AI, internet broadcasting, and anti-piracy.

Besides his practice, he translates foreign legal literature.  His recent publications include a Japanese translation of the last publication by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

 

Takashi Kobayashi, Geographic Compliance & Corporate - Legal Lead, Japan

Takashi Kobayashi is the Legal Lead for Japan Geographic Compliance & Corporate of Accenture. He oversees compliance, regulatory and corporate governance issues in Japan. In addition to traditional compliance issues such as anti-corruption, data privacy and competition, he now focuses on ethical issues in new technologies such as AI.

Prior to joining Accenture in 2017, he was a senior associate of Freshfields’ Tokyo office where he supported domestic and international clients in investigation, dispute and other compliance matters. He is a co-author of “Understanding to Global Arbitration” (Shoji-homu), “Understanding to Global Investigation” (Shoji-homu), “Legal and Risk Management for New Directors and Officers” (Shoji-homu) and others.

 

Sayo Takizawa, Managing Director, Legal and Compliance, Blackstone

Sayo Kondo Takizawa is a Managing Director in the Legal & Compliance Group of Blackstone and is based in Tokyo.  Prior to joining Blackstone in 2016, Ms. Takizawa worked at the law firms of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and Shearman & Sterling LLP in the Mergers & Acquisitions group in New York and Tokyo.

Ms. Takizawa received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated summa cum laude, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.

 

Tomoaki Kuragano, Head of Legal Japan, Medtronic

Tomoaki is a dual-licensed attorney in Japan and New York with diverse experience at top global law firms and healthcare corporations. As the Head of Legal Japan for Medtronic, he leads the legal team and work as a Japan leadership team member. He authored "Legal Practice for Medical Device Business" and co-authored pioneering guides on pharmaceutical and medical device laws. His certifications include Medical Device Fair Competition Code Instructor, Regulatory Science Expert (MA) and CIPP/E. His expertise in healthcare law earned him a top-three finalist position for Young Lawyer of the Year (In-House) at the ALB Japan Law Awards 2023.

Tim Hewitt is head of Japan for specialty insurance broker, BMS Group. Tim brings to BMS a diverse experience working both as a lawyer and in sales for private equity portfolio companies, most recently as Associate General Counsel for a global private equity firm portfolio company. Prior to that, Tim worked as Director, Indirect Sales, for a subsidiary of a financial services company, after several years there in legal leadership roles.  Before going in-house, Tim worked in private practice for several years both in the TMT teams and M&A teams at leading law firms in Sydney and Tokyo. Tim is fluent in both English and Japanese, has lived in Japan for 15+ years and is one of only a few foreigners in Japan who are licensed as an insurance broker in Japan.

Tommy Ou has fifteen years of experience in private practice and in-house.  He is currently Head of Legal, Asia and the U.S.,  at Colt Technology Services, a multinational telecommunications company specialized in network and IT infrastructure for businesses, with a primary focus on commercial matters and compliance in Asia Pacific and the U.S.  An attorney admitted to the bars of California and Washington D.C., he received a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Yale University.

Emi is a senior international lawyer with over 20-year experience at top global law firms and as head of legal for Accenture Japan.  In her current role as Managing Director of Legal, and Board Member at Accenture Japan, she manages a team of more than 110 lawyers and contract professionals.  Emi received her LL.B. from the University of Tokyo and graduated from the Legal Training and Research Institute of Japan. Emi received her LL.M. from Columbia Law School. Emi is a Japanese bengoshi admitted to practice in Japan and she is also admitted in New York.

 

Matthew Datum, General Manager, Legal & IP Department, Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc.

Matthew Datum serves as the General Manager of the Legal & IP Department at Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. in Tokyo, where he oversees both domestic and global legal strategies. With over a decade of experience at one of the world’s largest game publishers, Matt specializes in cross-border negotiation and legal compliance. He has spoken internationally on video game law and managing in-house legal departments in Japan, and is a board member of the Video Game Bar Association.

An avid video game player, Matt’s passion for gaming provides him with a unique insight into the legal issues facing the industry.

 

Sayaka Matsui, Representative Executive Officer and General Counsel, Unilever Japan Holdings G.K.

Sayaka Matsui, Representative Executive Officer and General Counsel of Unilever Japan Holdings G.K., is a legal practitioner with experience as an attorney in law firms and in-house legal. She completed her studies at the Waseda Law School (J.D.) in 2007, registered as an attorney (admitted in Japan) in 2008 and began working at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu. After gaining experience at Waseda Legal Commons Law Office, and as a visiting scholar at the UC Berkeley, School of Law, she became the Legal Manager at Credit Saison Co., Ltd. in 2017.
